In recent days, we found ourselves (well our daughter) shortlisted in a photo competition to win a Ski Holiday. A photo, taken during our recent holiday to Lapland of Em upside down in the snow attracted 1000 Facebook 'likes' (votes) in the first 4 days, 250+ ahead of the nearest competition, so great excitement was building around the house with the prospect of a week skiing.
We then discovered that the photo in second place - Becci and the reindeer planned to donate the prize should they win, to a local child bereavement charity near their home.
It is all too easy to get wrapped up in the wave of excitement and competition, with ever growing support from many people we do not know, supporting a beaming upside down smile in the snow.
We are fortunate enough to have that beaming smile every day, many families experience the one thing which no parent should ever have to - the loss of a child. A very caring and thoughtful child, Em came around to the wonderful and warm idea of supporting other families who will never have the future opportunities to be together that we have, and so now we are encouraging everyone who voted for Em's very happy photo, which hopefully made them smile, to try to put a smile on a family in times of deep distress, by voting for Becci and the reindeer in the competition.
It far from easy to dampen a child's spirits and their chance of winning a competition, but is far easier than living the rest of your life without your child.
