Today we are going to look at the ninth - fear and negativity...
Woooo - how does that feel just reading those two words - FEAR and NEGATIVITY ? Take a second to reflect on what you are actually physically feeling at the moment, perhaps a concentration in the chest? Maybe tenseness in the shoulders?
Before we trash the perils of fear and negativity altogether, lets remember that they are there to primarily keep us safe, and that is fine. In the great film 'Inside Out' all is going along delightfully until the negative emotions come along, but as we see, they are necessary to fully understand the positive ones.
Now lets's get back to the trashing of fear and negativity.
A good friend and client of mine once said (in a graphic design sense rather than the emotional sense) 'It is easier to edit that create' - in other words, it is far easier to find fault, be negative and create fear than it is is to come up with the idea in the first place.
Taking that a step further, think of the last time you had an idea, a thought, or wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary for you - be it jumping into the sea from a cliff, speaking to a stranger on a train, or even bungee jumping. An even better example is going back to when you were a teenager, and there was that person you wanted to ask out - what stopped you?
I am guessing, that fear and negativity came to the front of your thoughts, shouted louder than anything else, and stopped you taking action. That loudest of all voices - fear and negativity shouter louder than the rest, and we stopped, felt a little down beat, and went back to who we felt we should be, not who we aspire to be.
Fear and negativity are obstacles, things which make it difficult to move forward, things which at first glance seem to large to overcome, which is why we need to dedicate specific time to dealing with them.
At Serenity, after working with clients to create an amazing vision of their future, bringing into play the aspirations which may have been buried by the 'stuff' of life, a key thing is to live into that vision, to allow our thoughts to build on it, then the brain will work it's magic and find ways to move us forwards. Obstacles are dealt with separately, so we do not need to worry about them. Frequently, when sufficient space is allowed for the vision to develop, the obstacles (primarily fear and negativity) which seem so huge, are reduced to something which is actually rather easy to deal with. At that point, fear and negativity become a simple safety check in, rather than the huge issues which stop us in our tracks.
Some work to do here is :
The next time you find yourself with negative thoughts, is to pause, flip those negative thoughts around from 'what if those negative things don't happen' rather than 'that if they do happen'. Imagine that the challenge has been overcome and live into the dream.
When it comes to listening to negativity or people spreading fear - walk away, stop watching the news for example (you can't change the news, it is only opinion, and if it is really important you will find out another way).
Don't be the sponge to soak up other people's negativity - it is infectious (in a bad way)
Frequently, our fears stop us from even exploring the next step, and in reality the obstacles presented by those fears are often relatively simple to overcome.
