How many times have your heard of people going to the doctor with a range of mental illnesses, simply to be prescribed various medication?
Thankfully, this is becoming less common (the days of prescribing a long term course of the highly addictive valium for example have long gone) as doctors are becoming more and more aware of 'alternative' therapies, CBT for instance.
Dr Gene Bowman's study has found another key factor in our mental health - nutrition. Senior citizens with healthy diets tested better for mental acuity than those who ate junk food.
3 key chemicals come into play :
Serotonin (which balances our mood), is boosted by complex carbohydrates (peas, beans, whole grains etc)
Dopamine (makes us feel good and excited), comes from proteins (meats, fish etc)
Acetylcholine (helps our memory), is found in eggs, milk, organ meats and whole wheat products.
Foods found to fight depression include : turkey, walnuts, low-fat dairy, whole grains, green tea, turmeric, and those which combat low mental moods are : yogurt, kefir, soy sauce, tempeh, kimchi.
The added bonus, is that you can add in dark chocolate and ice-cream - but that is an article for another day.
Eat well, live well, think well.
Lack of certain vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients can lead to conditions affecting the mind.
